Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

VITA
stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and is a nationwide program operational from January 23 through April 15.

United Way IRS certified volunteers prepare tax returns for FREE for individuals & families earning less than $54,000. In 2016, our VITA program prepared nearly 3,000 tax returns, saved our clients over $450,000 in federal and state filing fees and got our clients nearly $5,000,000 in federal and state refunds.

If you would like to  have a United Way IRS certified volunteer prepare your tax return this year you need to bring the following:

  • Photo I.D.’s, Social Security Cards (or ITIN’s) and dates of birth for the taxpayer, spouse, children and other dependents you are claiming.
  • All W2s, 1099s and other income forms
  • A voided check for Direct Deposit
  • Last year’s tax return (if you have it)
  • Childcare provider name, address, and tax ID number

The UWEWH VITA program depends on the commitment of volunteers to staff this program. You can help your community in preparing taxes free of charge by becoming a volunteer with the United Way VITA.

You will receive training to provide free tax help for low-to-moderate income families who need assistance preparing their tax returns.

How does this training program work? First you will receive free training. There are several convenient dates to choose from, and you only have to attend two in-person training sessions. After that training is offered both online and in the classroom. The days and hours you volunteer are flexible to fit your schedule.
