SEEKING NOMINATIONS FOR THE 2012-2113 WILLIAM M. ASHBY COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD

In 1990, United Way of Essex and West Hudson established the William M. Ashby Community Service Award, which is presented biennially to a community leader. Mr. Ashby, who dedicated his life to the betterment of our community, was a noted author, civil rights pioneer, and founder of the Newark affiliate of the Urban League of Essex County. He was also instrumental in the formation of the Newark Welfare Federation and Community Chest, which was eventually to become the United Way of Essex and West Hudson.

In creating the Ashby Award, our organization sought to honor Mr. Ashby’s legacy of service, as well as to recognize those individuals whose contributions to our community reflect the ideals of the outstanding leader after whom the award is named.  The 2009-2010 William M. Ashby Community Service Award was presented to both, Sis June Favata and Former Governor, Thomas Kean, in recognition of their lifetime of service to the community.

It is time for our organization to begin the selection process for the next recipient of this prestigious award. This year, the final recommendation for the recipient will once again be made by an independent selection committee, comprising of outstanding community leaders committed to the principles of fairness, equality and integrity associated with Mr. Ashby’s life and legacy.

As a distinguished leader in our community, you may know of someone who is deserving of the award.  We invite you to submit up to three nominations.  These nominations can be drawn from within your organization, or from other involvements you may have in the community. The criteria for the award, as well as the nomination form can be found here.  The deadline for nominations is October 5, 2012.

Our thanks for your consideration of this request. We look forward to your input and to considering your candidate for this prestigious honor. If you have any questions regarding this award, please contact George L. Xuereb, Senior Director of Resource Development at the United Way of Essex and West Hudson, 973-854-2215.
