This Year’s William M. Ashby Community Service Award Honorees
This year’s William M. Ashby Community Service Award winners are, Mary Elizabeth Mathis-Ford of University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Concerned Citizens Advisory Board and Joseph Della Fave of the Iron Bound Community Corp.
William M. Ashby was a noted author, a civil rights pioneer, and the founder of the Urban League of Essex County-Newark. In 1923, he was instrumental in the formation of the Newark Welfare Federation and Community Chest, known today as United Way of Essex and West Hudson (UWEWH). The award is presented biannually by UWEWH to commemorate the life and achievements of the late Ashby and recognizes individuals whose contributions to the community reflect his community service ideals.

She has created many workshops for over 5,000 Newark school children. She cofounded and continues to organize Harmony Day, an annual event promoting the sharing of heritages and valuing cultural diversity. She also is responsible for the content of many of the workshops offered today by Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan New Jersey.
